Dr. Chyrene Cutting

Please join the Department of Counseling and Family Sciences in welcoming Dr. Chyrene Cutting, DMFT, LMFT, LMHC as our newest faculty member! Dr. Cutting is joining us as Assistant Professor in the Marital and Family Therapy MS online and on-campus programs.  

Dr. Cutting completed the advanced standing Doctor of Marital and Family Therapy program at Loma Linda University in 2022. She received her master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. In addition, Dr. Cutting holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Eastern Washington University with a minor in Women and Gender Studies.  

Dr. Cutting holds dual designation as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). She has served on both healthcare and nonprofit administrative committees, including Racial Justice and Fundraising committees for the YWCA. Dr. Cutting holds specialty training in Critical Incident Stress Management and is an experienced volunteer disaster responder. Other advanced training she holds includes Level 2 Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy. In her private practice, Dr. Cutting specializes in working with couples. She is an Advanced Trained EFT Therapist and holds formal Yoga Teacher training. Other settings she has worked in include inpatient, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programming.  

Dr. Cutting’s research interests include spirituality, therapy with couples, MENA populations, and culture bound trauma. Dr. Cutting is passionate about giving back to her community of Iranian Americans. She is a Champion Member of the Iranian American Women Foundation and serves as a professional mentor within their Mentorship to Internship Program. Dr. Cutting has advocated in various county, state, and national legislative campaigns on behalf of women and families, including those for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Organizations she has been a part of include the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy, American Counseling Association, International Centre of Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy, International Association of Women, and more.  

Dr. Cutting is a dedicated wife and mother. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and is known for her use of art and music as forms of self-expression.
