The Department of Psychology and School of Behavioral Health are thrilled to welcome Dr. David B. Newman to the faculty! Dr. Newman's appointment is in the Department of Psychology, but he will also be providing additional support across SBH.
Prior to beginning at Loma Linda University, he received a BA in psychology at the University of Virginia, an MA in experimental psychology at the College of William and Mary, a PhD in social psychology at the University of Southern California, and completed post-doc appointments at USC, UCSF, and Baylor University. During graduate school, he received grants to conduct research during two summers at Hokkaido University in Japan and at Seoul National University in South Korea.
As a social, personality, and health psychologist, his research examines the dynamic processes of well-being in daily life. Drawing on Ecological Momentary Assessment and daily diary techniques, he studies how nostalgia, social interactions, political orientation, religious beliefs and practices, emotion regulation strategies, and sleep influence well-being in daily life.
In addition to further advancing these lines of research and mentoring doctoral students in their research projects, Dr. Newman will also dedicate a portion of his time to teaching and providing statistical consultation for faculty and students in SBH. To date, he has published 31 journal articles and book chapters, including first-authored papers in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Annals of Behavioral Medicine, Emotion, and others. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the John Templeton Foundation, and has received media coverage from various outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, The Washington Post, and Psychology Today.
In his spare time, David enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter and watching soccer. We are so excited that Dr. Newman has joined the faculty! Welcome, Dr. Newman!
