This year marks a remarkable milestone in the history of the Loma Linda University Department of Psychology—the 30th anniversary of our incoming class. Three decades of growth, achievement, and transformation have shaped us into the vibrant and dynamic department we are today. As we pause to reflect on this incredible journey, we celebrate the many accomplishments, and look forward to an even brighter future as we continue to advance the field of psychology through our teaching, research, and service.
Since our inaugural classes of 1994, our department has been firmly rooted in the idea that sound psychological practice rests on a firm psychological science foundation. From our humble beginnings, the department has flourished into a center of excellence known for its commitment to academic rigor, innovative research, cutting-edge clinical practice, and the holistic development of students and those we serve.
Over the years, we have been privileged to witness the evolution of our department, which currently has two APA-accredited programs, 15 faculty, and 141 students, as well as hundreds of alumni who have completed internships, postdoctoral fellowships, and been employed in all 50 states. The contributions of our faculty, students, and alumni have been central to shaping these developments. One of our proudest accomplishments has been the creation of a diverse environment where outstanding students from all backgrounds can thrive. Through our programs, we have prepared students to be critical thinkers, compassionate practitioners, skilled researchers, and responsible citizens in an increasingly complex world. The stories of our graduates—now working in VA and other hospitals, academic medical centers, university counseling centers, community mental health centers, academic departments, private practice, and other settings—are a testament to their professional and personal character and the education they have received.
In these 30 years, we have seen the department grow in both size and influence. Our faculty have published influential research, secured prestigious grants, and used their work to positively influence patients, our campus, and our broader community. We have also built strong partnerships with local, regional, national, and global communities, using psychology as a tool for social change, mental health advocacy, and human well-being.
Looking ahead, the future is filled with exciting possibilities. As we enter our next phase, we are committed to embracing new technologies, evolving research methodologies, and the emerging challenges of our time. The study of psychology is more relevant than ever as we navigate the broad range of issues related to human behavior and mental health. Our department will continue to be at the forefront of these developments, producing research that informs practice and policy, while nurturing the next generation of scholars and practitioners.
As we celebrate this milestone, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have been part of this journey—our dedicated faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners. Together, we have built a legacy of excellence that will continue to inspire and shape the future of psychology for many years to come. Here's to 30 years of discovery, growth, and the pursuit of knowledge—and to many more to come!
With pride and excitement,
The Department of Psychology
