Program Highlights

The MSW program is now in its third decade of training advanced practitioners in the field of social work. Our graduates are leaders in the field and are recognized for contributions towards improving the quality of lives for clients and improving the functioning of systems in meeting the needs of the community.

Within the program, there is a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary learning. As a university, Loma Linda is unique in having its own comprehensive system of integrated health care. Students have the option of completing practicums within the Loma Linda University Healthcare setting, which includes hospitals, outpatient healthcare clinics, and behavioral health care programs. Additionally, there are over sixty contracted community-based organizations where students can complete their field practicum experience. The academic program has a focus on teaching general practice skills in the first year, and in the second year it prepares students for skills related to advanced clinical practice. Our diverse faculty have expertise in the areas of behavioral health, program planning, child welfare, hospital social work, research, and gerontology. A very low faculty to student ratio allows for a great deal of personal mentoring and interaction with students. Our Phi Alpha honors society has been nationally recognized for its work in the community. Further, our faculty are involved in international outreach through the International Behavioral Health Trauma Team. They have traveled to over forty countries to provide both direct service and training.

A Christ-centered approach focusing on whole-person care is utilized to promote wellness for individuals and families. The program is based on the values of compassion, integrity, excellence, freedom, and justice.
